Domestic rabbits should not be kept in cages. They can learn to use the litter box like cats and roam around the room. The main thing is to make the room safe for them. And rabbits are much more difficult to treat than dogs or cats, because there are fewer veterinarians who specialize in their treatment than there are veterinarians for dogs and cats. And it is imperative that rabbits have their teeth filed once a year (or as your veterinarian tells you), because their teeth grow constantly and can become too long. If you think their teeth are not growing enough, you should check with an X-ray to see if their teeth are growing in the other direction (not down, but up).
Not all rabbits need their teeth filed. It varies depending on the rabbit, their genetics, and diet.
But that's something a veterinarian should say... Because my rabbit has a good diet and it doesn't help at all. It's all because of her skull structure, which is like that from birth. Therefore, she undergoes surgery every two years 😖
@Emily that would be because of her genetics not her diet then. both of my rabbits have not had any issues. i know dwarf rabbits have dental issues due to how they were breed. i'm guessing its like how some humans need braces but some dont. ive also heard that when rabbits who needed filing get older they sometimes dont anymore. probably depends on the cause of the issue.
