Thinking about the Merrily We Roll Along (2024) proshot again. I think that might be the best that show could possibly be lol
Still, I feel like I have some gripes with the writing, because when you take away the backwards-storytelling gimmick, it isn't a unique story at all. "Guy becomes famous and loses his friends in the process" is such a common trope, and tbh the play doesn't add much to the characters to make them stand out on their own.
That almost makes it even more impressive of a feat that this production is as good as it is, primarily carried by Sondheim's music and the earnest performances of the main cast. I kind of love how the cinematography of the proshot plays into that. Some close-ups are def TOO close, but tbf there's a lot of good facial expression acting that you can't miss. I still can't believe "Our Time" makes me tear up at the end despite the play's shortcomings, like there's kind of a bittersweet undertone to the verses.
how did you find out about this show? i haven't heard of it but it sounds very interesting the way you describe it
My high school did a production of it when my sister was in stage crew lol. Very challenging musical for teenagers to do tbh, I didn't understand a thing that was going on 😭 but when the new Broadway version came out in movie theaters last year, I went to see it with my friends and really enjoyed it!
@Suzettey oh wow, i havent watched many musicals but this one sounds very interesting
